We were doubled over laughing one day last summer reading NYC’s Gunk magazine. On one of the pages was a small notice of a correction, noting that in the previous issue they had mistakenly printed Brooklyn's Union Pool as Union Poo. Last night we low-tailed it to Union Poo Union Pool to catch Komodos headline release of their new single 17, with standout support from Accomplice and Patching. Here’s a snapshot of the memory from the night:

Patching opened with smooth grooves and heart-deep melodies. We didn’t take a lot of notes because we were so mesmerized by how beautiful the music was. We’ve been waiting for the colorful blooms of spring and this was our first taste of that magic. To see what we’re talking about, check out their recording of standout song Maps on Youtube here. The group is well experienced individually but brand new as a collective, splashing onto the scene with the best bink-bonk in the business. To prove they can do it all, they whipped out a cover of Nirvana’s Breed at the end of their set. If King Krule is the moon, Patching is the sun.

Accomplice put the power in power-trio. It takes a special kind of musical vision to pull off a purely instrumental song, and our two favorites from their set were their two wordless jams. Their fearless commitment to dynamic and rhythmic switchups kept us captivated. They reminded us of early OVLOV, with less emphasis on melody and more emphasis on punching creative peepholes through the wall of sound. It was a frenzy of noise, again, another rite of spring that left us wide-eyed and excited.

“I wear my sunglasses at night. So I can, so I can...” ...match the Komodos' cool as they celebrated the release of their new single 17. The slight baritone drawl of the vocals, half Dylan, half Wunderhorse, turned the songs into cinematic adventures. Case and point was the encore, which started with a screaming drone guitar, adding in brooding bass melody, before unfolding into a full fledged finale. Contained within Union Pool's gilded picture frame stage, the experience felt like a modern live action reincarnation of Interpol's opening track Untitled from their Turn On The Bright Lights debut. If you know what we’re talking about, you understand the transcendence of the moment.

What a gig. There’s some kind of thought that last night's performers put in our heads. We think it has to do with the omnipresent social commentary suggesting the crumbling of the world. Sometimes it seems to be delivered with a subtext of learned helplessness. Get the fuck up and make the world you wish to see. That’s the kind of resolve we felt with Patching, Accomplice, and Komodos last night. We left feeling challenged and empowered to do the same. If you missed the show, connect with the bands to be at the next one. See you around, Rrrat Pack.
